  1. What will it cost me to sell this property? This question goes through your head, however, some are afraid to ask it out loud.  Don’t be.  Who pays the commission and how much is an important inquiry that affects you directly as a home buyer/seller.  Understanding how commission works makes this process more comprehensible for you to sit back and relax once that is out of the way.   Once you establish a relationship with an agent, if commission is a deciding factor, make sure that you are not losing services should a reduced commission be approved.
  2. What areas and types of properties do you handle? Making sure the agent is familiar with the area and that the market idiosyncrasies are understood is important.  Your agent having an understanding of your area will help them be the best person to buy/sell a home by matching your criteria with the buyer/seller of the home.  Your agent knowing the ins and outs of an area or type of property can really be advantageous either way (buying or selling) for you.
  3. How will you communicate with me? This is crucial to buying or selling a home and can make or break a potential sale or purchase.  The market is moving at a fast pace right now and being able to make or accept an offer takes accessibility.  An agent giving you contact information such as:  a number, an email and a fax number would not be unusual to ask for and most likely this information will be on their business cards provided to you.  Having the information is the first step, however, making sure of how easy it will be to reach them is also important.  Feel free to inquire on accessibility.  Can you text the agent and do you want to be called or receive a text with questions.  Do you prefer a text or an email?  The agent should be receptive to working with your preferences.
  4. Can you share references? Talking to the buyers and sellers the agent has worked with can be a tie breaker for you if you are still having trouble deciding.  This can also give you the reassurance that you have made the right decision on the agent for you.

  1. You make a very good point by saying to check how they will be communicating with you. In my opinion, it shows how professional they are by how fast they respond. It would be nice if they were able to be in contact at all times.

  2. My husband and I are recently married and looking to find a home. We want to make sure we have the right real estate agent to help us with this process. Thanks for the information on the importance of ensuring that the agent is familiar with the area.

  3. I like what you said about making sure you choose an agent who will make it easy to reach them. Communication is key in selling a house, and I want to make sure the person I am hiring knows that and will do everything he can to keep me in the loop. I am trying to sell my house before the summer ends, so I can get my kids moved before the school year starts. I will definitely be asking about this while I search for the right real estate agent.
